Fix cPanel “SoftException: GID of script is smaller than min_gid”

You upload or edit a PHP file on a cPanel server and the page dies with HTTP 500. The Apache error log shows:

SoftException in Application.cpp:264: UID of script "/home/user/public_html/index.php"
is smaller than min_uid
-- or --
SoftException in Application.cpp:267: GID of script is smaller than min_gid

What it means

The server runs suPHP/suEXEC, which executes each account’s PHP as that account’s user — and refuses to run any script owned by a privileged user or group (UID/GID below min_uid/min_gid, typically 100). The message is literal: your file is owned by root (GID 0) or another system group, usually because it was uploaded or edited while logged in as root over SSH/SFTP, or extracted from an archive that preserved foreign ownership.

The fix: give the files back to the account

SSH in (or ask your host) and reset ownership to the cPanel account — here mysite:

# single file
chown mysite:mysite /home/mysite/public_html/index.php

# or the whole docroot after a bad extraction
chown -R mysite:mysite /home/mysite/public_html

While you’re at it, fix permissions — suPHP also rejects group/world-writable scripts (that one appears as “file is writeable by others”):

find /home/mysite/public_html -type d -exec chmod 755 {} \;
find /home/mysite/public_html -type f -exec chmod 644 {} \;

Reload the page — no Apache restart needed; suPHP checks ownership per request.

Verify and prevent

ls -l /home/mysite/public_html | head
# every file should read  mysite mysite

Prevention is simply workflow: upload as the cPanel user (its SFTP credentials, or cPanel File Manager), not as root. If you must work as root, end with the recursive chown above. Extracting archives? tar as root preserves the original owner — add --no-same-owner, or extract as the account user.

WHM/root note: the thresholds live in /opt/suphp/etc/suphp.conf (min_uid/min_gid). Lowering them is the wrong fix — it re-opens the privilege-separation hole the check exists to close. Fix ownership instead.
